Sanjay Roy: The Accused and Arrest

Background of Sanjay Roy’s Role as a Civic Volunteer

Sanjay Roy worked as a please meet and also as a civic help with the Kolkata Police because they had to assist the police force and work with the public. They say that his position provided him with information regarding police procedures and that he was alleged to have abused his position of authority in the force.

Arrest and Initial Claims of Innocence
Roy was arrested on August 10, 2024 following the murder of trainee doctor that was found with Rutgers RG Kar Medical College. Even though Roy compiled extensive forensic evidence: the DNA and CCTV, he denied any involvement in the crime at the beginning of interrogation.

Forensic Evidence: DNA and CCTV Footage
The forensic investigation played a pivotal role in linking Sanjay Roy to the horrific crime at RG Kar Medical College. Several key pieces of evidence were uncovered.

DNA, Semen, and Saliva Found on the Victim’s Body.
An outstanding result in the case was given by DNA studies. Analysis of viscera conducted in the course of the trial showed that the defendant’s DNA matched with the sperms found together with saliva on the girl’s body. Twenty four samples including an urethral swab taken from the victim were sent to the CFSL at Kolkata where the involvement of Roy was established. Saliva that was on a different swab taken from the victim’s privates also contained Roy’s DNA
Additionally, hair samples found at the crime scene were also linked to Roy. These findings significantly strengthened the case against him and became key evidence presented by the CBI in their chargesheet.

CCTV Footage Placing Roy at the Crime Scene

The fourth important source of information was CCTV data obtained from the hospital. This footage presented Roy in the vicinity of the crime scene at the time when the attack was taking place, the trainee doctor was brutally attacked and killed. This – together with the extensive forensic results presented in evidence – made it increasingly hard for Roy to sustain his initial denials

A proper integration of forensic results and surveillance video gave the reliable starting point of the CBI’s case against Sanjay Roy that allowed his formal charges of rape and murder

. Public Outcry and Protests by the Medical Community

Nation wide Protests Led by Doctors

The CBI’s chargesheet laid out critical forensic evidence directly implicating Sanjay Roy in the crime. Key findings include:

  • DNA evidence: The CBI confirmed that DNA samples, including semen and saliva found on the victim’s body, matched Roy’s DNA.
  • Hair samples: Short hair found at the crime scene was identified as belonging to Roy.
  • CCTV footage: Visual evidence from security cameras placed Roy at the crime scene during the time of the attack.

These findings formed the core of the CBI’s charges of rape and murder against Roy, bolstering the prosecution’s case with scientific and visual evidence that directly linked him to the crime.

Legal Proceedings and Court Updates

Charges Brought Against Sanjay Roy

The 2024 Kolkata rape case has led to urgent calls for enhanced security in hospitals across India. Key changes being recommended include:

  • Stricter surveillance with increased CCTV coverage in vulnerable areas such as dormitories and isolated sections of hospitals.
  • 24/7 security personnel at hospital premises, especially in areas frequented by medical staff during off-hours.
  • Restricted access to non-essential personnel and better identification procedures for all visitors and workers
  • Hospitals and medical associations are also advocating for the installation of panic buttons and other emergency systems to allow healthcare workers to report threats quickly.

Broader Implications for the Safety of Women in Workplaces

This case has highlighted the broader issue of workplace safety for women, particularly in environments like hospitals where employees may work late hours or in isolated areas. The incident has sparked a conversation about strengthening sexual harassment prevention measures in all workplaces. Experts are recommending that employers adopt stricter policies on workplace conduct, provide regular safety training, and ensure that all women feel protected at work

Thecase has amplified the demand for better enforcement of workplace safety laws, especially those that address sexual violence and harassment.
